Thames Ditton – Low energy retrofit
Situated in the Thames Ditton area, the house is the result of a bold architectural venture in the 1970s. The original house boasted up-to-date features in HVAC technology for the time it was built.
The role of greentomatoenergy was to bring the fabric and building services up to 21st century sustainability standards, reducing running costs and improving comfort.
Based on thermal modelling, greentomatoenergy specified internal insulation to augment the insulation in the cavity walls, roof insulation and a whole house mechanical heat recovery ventilation system (MVHR). greentomatoenergy provided assistance from design through to commissioning of the MVHR system.
A high level of air tightness was achieved. greentomatoenergy provided pressure testing services to identify the leaks in the building envelope that can lead to heat losses.
Ventilation in the swimming pool was dealt with independently via a stand-alone heat recovery ventilation unit. This approach eliminated the exposure to chlorine of the more expensive MVHR system.
greentomatoenergy designed and installed a solar photovoltaic array (PV) and designed a solar thermal system to help reduce the carbon impact and cost of electricity usage and hot water demand.
